It has come to my attention that Mick has made an extensive public statement regarding the allegations in this post, among other things. In light of this new information, there have been many requests to remove Marty's post. In the interest of maintaining the historical record I believe it's important to leave this post in place. However it's clearly time we heard the other side as well.

Mick Gordon: "My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal"

EDIT: Locking Marty's post as it just pushes SEO higher in the search engines when people comment here, and we don't have the manpower to moderate the sheer amount of new comments. Civil discussion should be taken elsewhere, such as the currently-pinned post on the subreddit.

Note that moderators don't have the ability to edit other people's posts, reset upvote counts, etc. The post is remaining up for historical context.

Disclosures:

  • I am not affiliated with id Software, Zenimax, Microsoft, Bethesda, or Mick Gordon.
  • I have not been actively involved with the management of this subreddit (or the now-official spin-off Discord server) for over two years. I only stayed on the mod team here in case of emergency (ironically).
  • I have no idea what transpired with our former head moderator Mr-R00t. I haven't talked to him in months.
  • The only compensation I have ever received for my past efforts in this community was a key for DOOM Eternal, a t-shirt, and occasional friendly chats with Bethesda community managers on the Discord (which I am no longer a part of).

I will be checking in with the rest of the mod team over the next couple days to see what our next steps will be, if any.

Been having a chuckle over the deleted comments at: https://web.archive.org/web/20220514030007/https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/gdg25y/doom_eternal_ost_open_letter/

Especially liked the guy claiming to know the cut and dry of it.

[–]The_HyperDiamond 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s so jarring seeing Reddit comments from 2 years ago.

[–]CheddarTuba 76 points77 points  (4 children)

How did that letter take people in so thoroughly? It essentially said "It wasn't me, it was him." and the fans just ate it up. Like, clearly there was a wealth of information not being shared.

I can't believe Mick got explicit death threats involving his family. Gamers really fucking suck sometimes.

[–]TheFergusLife 926 points927 points  (23 children)

Go fuck yourself, Marty.

[–]GameboyJA 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Reddit Doom mods can go fuck themselves too for how they treated mick

Ayup, it already started

[–]blueish55 377 points378 points  (9 children)

The worst part about all of this is seeing the comments that fucking ate it all up.

Remember, literally never trust comments put out by corporate.

[–]Phenizzle 367 points368 points  (4 children)

Boy this Marty guy sounds like a real "ball-ache".

[–]karnagetheanimator 3219 points3220 points  (377 children)

I hope you all can come to good terms again with each other, and best of luck on the DLC.

[–][deleted] 914 points915 points  (225 children)

I hope for the same, this is very complicated though and I still feel like we have a lot missing, like why did Mick start acting like that in the first place?

Idk I hope they can work together again though, this sucks both ways and everyone lost

[–]BillNyeCreampieGuy 1248 points1249 points  (148 children)

like why did Mick start acting like that in the first place?

As a professional creative, I feel it’s probably because Mick is an artist. Not only do I collaborate with a vast array of art professionals, but as one can assume, I’m friends with all sorts of artists as well. It can be rare to find a consistent professional who’s either able to or even willing to meet deadlines. It can be tolerable at best, frustrating and completely unprofessional at worst.

Mick’s a musical genius, and an extremely popular one at that. I don’t doubt he is more often than not very professional, but I just don’t know. Also, to give him the benefit of the doubt, it can be hell to pump out top-notch pieces of your work that you can say, “okay, this is complete.” It’s a signature of your soul, and for an artist, it’s everything.

I’m a fan of Mick’s, but this seems pretty genuine and not that farfetched of a situation at all. If not common. Unfortunate all around.

Edit:

...idk what is happening?

My comment is 3 years old. Why are a flood of redditors coming out of nowhere and brigading me? Lol

And idk what bullshit you're talking about. My comment was clearly speculative based on the information we had at the time. And I barely criticized him. I used a semblance of his story to delve into my own, anecdotal experiences.

What is happening lol

[–]clk62 288 points289 points  (1 child)

Well, that sentence takes a whole new sense...

[–]Marswick 57 points58 points  (0 children)

"The source is that I made it the fuck up"

[–]Abject_Sort3468 257 points258 points  (8 children)

That the ZeniMax lawyers fought to keep this post up just for reddit to use it as a Marty pinata is poetic justice.

Now we just need a GoFundMe to get Mick the money he lost when he told Id to "Go to hell"

[–]Galevik 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Not a GoFundMe, the community shouldn't have to shell out cash from their pockets, where Zenimax with their $7Billion can clearly afford to pay Mick themselves especially when they're the one's who profited on the situation in the first place.

[–]Shredderguy23 207 points208 points  (4 children)

Downvote this trash post.

[–]docrictus 199 points200 points  (11 children)

Hindsight is 20/20 but why the fuck did this get so many upvotes and awards in the first place?

We've seen time and time and time again that 99% of the time it's management's fault not the creative when it comes to situations like this.

Especially in video game production where we have seen some of the worst treatment to employees at every level of production from the indie products to AAA games

Fuck incompetent management who only exist to suck off incompetent executives who suck off share holders because all they care about is the bottom line.

And a big fuck you to Marty.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (5 children)

Look at all the people in the top comments calling mick out too, fucking disgusting. Bet they feel ashamed of themselves right now

[–]ThE_KiNgxCacodemon best demon 2725 points2726 points  (596 children)

As for the immediate future, we are at the point of moving on and won’t be working with Mick on the DLC we currently have in production

That's a damn shame :(

[–]NoContest5 1291 points1292 points  (346 children)

Man, reading that felt like a punch in the guts. Mick Gordon's work is absolutely fantastic. A real shame that it has to come to this :(

[–]deekaydubya 674 points675 points  (247 children)

His work perfectly complemented the game. Sorry to hear things behind the scenes weren't as cohesive as it seemed

[–]TheRandomApple 2032 points2033 points  (233 children)

Yeah, I agree. His music for both 2016 and Eternal are incredible. That being said, being "good" is only half the job. If you can't deliver on your product, put your contractor in a bad position, and try to play victim afterwards.. Well sorry but you don't deserve the job.

Edit: 2.5 years later, oof. I’ve responded to the new information in the appropriate thread. This take was rough even back when I made it when we only knew half of the story. Knowing what we know now, I would just like to apologize for being a tool about the situation and not believing Mick. The shit id Software pulled is horrendous and I’m sorry for falling for the smear campaign.

[–]XxRocky88xX 165 points166 points  (37 children)

Yeah what he did seems really scummy now. He asked for multiple extensions and he still wasn’t able to meet them, which I get, shit happens, but then he asked id to help him out then immediately afterwards turns around and blames id and says he wanted to do the full thing when fans weren’t happy. He’s incredibly talented but this is an asshole thing to do

[–]low_d725 54 points55 points  (3 children)

And Bethesda allowed him to keep his bonuses for early and extra delivery when they gave him an extension. Like what?

[–]justins_porn 81 points82 points  (42 children)

Speaking from experience (my own self included in this description), creative types sometimes just can't deal with the long term business environment. I know that when you make something, in your mind it is never "done." there is always a section that you know you could polish, and bit that you know could be different, better. Oftentimes, i am only done with a project when I hit the hard deadline, and I usually feel like I am submitting something incomplete.

I feel like that's what I'm getting from this, that the studio has commitments to meet, and the dude just never felt like it "clicked" the way he felt that it needed to and didn't want to commit to something he felt wasnt up to par.

Unfortunately, when you go into the business world you have to do that sometimes, and revise based on feedback. The ad agency I used to work for had an 80% pefect rule on short turnaround projects for that exact reason. My boss knew that if it were solely up to me, everything would be late, but it would look damn good. You can't do that when you have hard deadlines.

[–]yellow_logic 496 points497 points  (203 children)

After reading all that, it implies the fault lies on Mick alone.

According to id, he was given more than enough time to finish the tracks and kept asking id to compromise. I’m not sure what Mick had going on during that timeframe, but, nevertheless, that’s unprofessional on his part if this is all true.

I’ll reserve more judgement for when Mick inevitably responds to this. However, this is just further proof that people should stop pulling out pitchforks until we know both sides of the story.

[–]MoreWarthog 29 points30 points  (17 children)

He has to respond, because Marty, on behalf of id Software, has officially stated that Mick is an unreliable person to work with. Not many game producers (or any producers) would hire those people, if at all, no matter how good their work is.

[–]solacir18 170 points171 points  (73 children)

The problem was Mick stated he doubted that he would work with iD/Bethesda ever again. He didn't explain exactly why. It was us who assumed it was their fault and theirs alone. While Mick could have clarified a few things, it was not his obligation to do so although it would have greatly helped. Now that we know the full story, we can start to understand the inner workings surrounding this situation. Mick was hired contractually and expected to deliver by a certain date. Deadline closes in and Mick starts feeling the pressure so in comes Chad to assist. Now it's crunch time and they have to push something out.

Edit: I noticed an uptick in responses recently and seeing that I made this comment 2 years ago, I thought I'd see if there is more developments on this story. It looks like Mick is now claiming he suffered abuses during his time creating the soundtrack.

[–]gordon_madmanDE 2018 HUD Worshipper 90 points91 points  (0 children)

It makes me feel like this

[–]GrizzlyOne95 1704 points1705 points  (44 children)

Thanks for explaining everything. Safe to say most of us love both Mick's music and Doom, and I for one am very sad they are splitting ways for now. :( And yeah definitely not ok that id employees are being harassed, that crosses the line.

Really looking forward to the DLC though.

[–]Databreaks 420 points421 points  (37 children)

Yeah, it's ridiculous when people feel like just being dissatisfied with a bad situation isn't enough on its own, and have to escalate. Even if the employee were hypothetically 100% responsible it still wouldn't justify going after them; it's just video game music. It's not like he killed the franchise by mixing some songs incorrectly.

[–]GrizzlyOne95 165 points166 points  (35 children)

Yeah exactly, like damn the guy was just trying to do what he could, they still tried to give Mick his time. I'd argue they should let Mick do a "Vol 2" so he can still put out tracks he wants to make, on his own timeline. I really understand both sides here.

[–]Databreaks 205 points206 points  (24 children)

If anything Mick comes out looking bad here because he should have the foresight to realize the only side the fans are going to see are his public takes, which seemed to imply they took finished songs from him and mixed them wrong, when the truth was he took too long to do what he was being paid to do and they had to make their own music out of random snippets to make the deadline.

[–]ecurrent94Protip: To defeat the Tyrant, shoot at it until it dies 110 points111 points  (16 children)

I fucking knew it was a deadline issue. It makes no sense that his music was just suddenly taken and mixed differently. People on here were shitting on the id devs and it was really disheartening to see. People jump the gun and that guy on YouTube who shared Mick’s music certainly didn’t help the situation when he stirred the pot.

[–]ChuperChotgun 3403 points3404 points  (152 children)

This is extremely disheartening, but understandable, it's a real shame. But we still love Mick and we still love you guys at id Software.

For the DLCs you guys should get Andrew Hulshult on board, he is extremely good if not as good as Mick is at doing music

[–]GrizzlyOne95 1233 points1234 points  (35 children)

Another +1 for Andrew Hulshult, his OST for Dusk is amazing.

[–]Sgt_SARS 506 points507 points  (25 children)

Hulshult for the win. Anyone get his version of the original Doom soundtrack? If not it's called IDKFA and it's incredible.

[–]Sidorovich_Stalks 182 points183 points  (0 children)

I listen to that quite often. Bloody amazing, I would love to hear his take on DOOM Eternal

[–][deleted] 83 points84 points  (1 child)

Its awesome to listen with Brutal Doom

[–]ayyb0ss69 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Brutal Doom just aint the same without Hulshult’s killer soundtrack accompanying it.

[–]redletterday94 49 points50 points  (1 child)

He really is another incredibly talented artist, when I first listened to his work for both the original DOOM music as well as Dusk, I was playing them on repeat for weeks

[–][deleted] 209 points210 points  (7 children)

If Mick can't be in, Andrew Hullshut is great then, but I wonder if he has time for it considering he's in a million projects already

[–]jaaardstyck<3 Caco 72 points73 points  (3 children)

Considering his IDKFA album, if he got the chance to record new, original works for DOOM, I think he'd make the time.

[–]BigBreadyBoi 158 points159 points  (19 children)

I love Andrew, but I feel lots of people are starting to see him as some sort of "backup Mick Gordon". I think this would only cement that. I mean, if I was gonna have anyone replace Mick it would probably still be Andrew, but I just hope it doesn't offend him as an artist or anything, if you get what I mean.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Lots of artists don’t give a shit what it takes to get their work in front of people - even if it means starting out as a backup for someone else

[–]manDboogie 27 points28 points  (4 children)

I might be in the extreme minority on this, but whether they go with Hulshult or someone else I'd actually be open to them doing something different and not trying to just emulate a palette swap of Mick's style.

I mean, not as drastically different as ukelele disco, but still.

[–]illegal_tacos 57 points58 points  (3 children)

Hulshult is incredibly talented, and it's low-key impressive that his stuff with NewBlood is the most well known work he's done and he hasn't been taken on for some other AAA titles besides Quake Champions. Shit even Rise of the Triad had a pretty good soundtrack.

[–]Kamakazie 57 points58 points  (1 child)

Hulshult is already working with id on Quake Champions so hopefully this can lead to some work for him on Doom as well. His music is outstanding.

[–]megaboyx90 55 points56 points  (6 children)

If we could get Andrew Hulshult & Trent Reznor to collaborate for further Doom stuff, that would be a huge dream of mine

[–]RobKhonsu 84 points85 points  (6 children)

and/or Markie Music who created a number of fan themes for Quake Champions as well as contracted to make the official Quake Pro League theme.

And Marty, give Mick the music award trophies. He deserves them.

Marty Stratton - DICK Eternal.

[–][deleted] 297 points298 points  (22 children)

All I gotta say is... Woah. This message was really enlightening. Both on how the business side of things work and what happened between Mick and ID. Although I love Mick and his work I understand ID's side too. Thanks to everyone over there, both Mick and Marty for keeping the fans in mind and especially Chad for doing what he did. With you guys making AAA games now, it means a lot to us fans to hear from you guys on such a personal level. Although ID and Nick are parting ways, I wish you both the best! All of you! Edit: hey my first award thingie! Thanks! :)

[–]from_dust 25 points26 points  (5 children)

Mick and Marty... I sense a Reality TV show, mext fall...

[–]noctorrent 105 points106 points  (2 children)

Honestly I'm glad this post wasn't removed, now we have historical evidence of his subversion. Thank you Mick for your patience and telling your story.

[–]Cfurber 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Fuck you, Marty.

[–]MrD3a7h 90 points91 points  (2 children)

The lies in this post really show how scummy of a company both id and Bethesda are.

Not interested in Starfield if this is how they treat their content creators.

[–]LouisJoseph003 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Shame on you.

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Psst hey Marty, cmere I got something to say

Fuck you

[–][deleted] 416 points417 points  (32 children)

Marty is a great dude and so is the whole rest of the gang @ id software. Meeting marty & hugo @ the slayers club event was a big highlight of the weekend for me. Marty talked w/ me about snapmap and he let me tell him all the reasons why i think it should eventually make its way into eternal if possible. Hes the man.

Hopefully everything is good on Mick's end, hes a fantastic artist and I have been loving his work on the DOOM series.

A positive end to all this can still be reached since it sounds like the offer to finish the OST is an open one. Maybe Mick will finish his work if its something he still wants. In any case it sounds like ID Software did their part.

[–][deleted] 72 points73 points  (6 children)

What did Marty have to say about Snapmap? Always wished I could chat with the dude about it.

[–]Chubzdoomer 39 points40 points  (3 children)

I'm curious as well. SnapMap was really cool and just needed a little more love (and optimization... good LORD those load times!).

[–]MarsAstro 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Marty is a great dude

Three years later, it seems that might not be the case after all

[–]alfons100 27 points28 points  (0 children)

[–]Vorpal_Scorpo 79 points80 points  (0 children)

You're a gigantic piece of shit Marty

[–]mnm2595 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Fuck Marty Stratton. Will never play another game with that lying fuck's name attached. Clearly he's jealous of the talent he doesn't have so throws a decent guy under the bus and ruins his rep. Piece of shit.

[–]MufasaJesus 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Aged like fine milk.

[–]ZeldaFan158 73 points74 points  (0 children)

You’re a piece of shit. You won’t get away with treating people like this much longer. How many people other than Mick have fallen victim to your delusional, methodical, cruel strategies?

[–]The-Illusive-Guy 66 points67 points  (2 children)

F*cking liar, you destroyed Mick's reputation. Assh*le...

[–][deleted] 129 points130 points  (16 children)

Grabbing the popcorn now

[–]phokal 62 points63 points  (1 child)

I also took the effort to re-find this and downvote it. What a disaster.

[–]MulberryDependent 60 points61 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 660 points661 points  (180 children)

So basically you would have gotten in trouble with the law if it wasn't released. I don't see how that was your fault

[–]KiaraZim 400 points401 points  (45 children)

Exactly. They had a deadline that Mick knew months in advance, and still even then gave him extra time to complete the work. If anything you guys are saints for taking that extra risk and allowing that.

[–]Rogue100 56 points57 points  (13 children)

Going to laugh if the hivemind swings fully back on Mick's side after his inevitable response.

[–]bruhkwehwark 38 points39 points  (1 child)

[–]Rogue100 38 points39 points  (0 children)

[–]minianthunter 25 points26 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You fucking called it!!!!

[–]techhfreakk 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Kudos to you Mick for coming out after all these days with the truth. As an artist myself who have dealt with corporate greed in the past in some way, incidents like these really bring you down and adversely affect your creativity as an artist.

I can only imagine how much pain you have endured all these days with greedy corporate assholes treating you like this through no fault of your own.

I hope you get back the opportunities you lost in your career now that you've ousted this bastard. God speed, Mick!

To @mods Marty needs to be banned from this sub for misinformation and spreading fake news and for destroying an artist's livelihood.

Oh, and btw FUCK YOU MARTY!!!

[–]Chclve 52 points53 points  (12 children)

I saw that I had upvoted this post. I feel dirty. When reading Micks entire statement, I was thinking he was a bit gullible, believing Marty, when he dealing with an obvious psychopath. But of course it wasn’t obvious then.

When reading this post again I kinda understand him. It can be hard not to be duped by evil people with no conscience. Fuck you Marty.

[–]TheshiggityshwaI AM the demons 105 points106 points  (5 children)

Ah, man. Marty you're the best, dude. It sucks that this is the way things go but that's how it is. I know Mick's gonna win with this ost and I wish him the best going forward.

[–]Cfurber 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Marty you’re the best, dude

Oh how the mighty have fallen

[–]CarawayColt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

well this comment aged like milk

[–]Rec-9 621 points622 points  (57 children)

Understandable. Deadlines are hard when you don't think your work is quite done and the communication that happened from the community has been somewhat distressing. However, please please please give some legal room for a "director's cut"/"composter's cut" of the OST. I would love to hear what Mick could do without having to worry as much about the time constraints.

[–]HugootzGame Director | id Software 521 points522 points  (51 children)

As stated in the letter - “If Mick is dissatisfied with the content of his delivery, we would entertain distributing additional tracks.”

[–]GrizzlyOne95 167 points168 points  (35 children)

That seems like it would be a great solution for everyone, if Mick is willing.

[–]sodacandan4 52 points53 points  (2 children)

You’re in hot water now Marty. Care to elaborate ? Or are you scared cause you were caught possibly lying for your own gain?

[–]aspeedomodel 49 points50 points  (1 child)

por favor DLC Artist -> ANDREW HULSHULT

[–]SgtJackVisback 251 points252 points  (69 children)

Trent Reznor, please

If none of those will work, then I'll go for my personal wildcard: Aubrey Hodges

[–]saadghauri 198 points199 points  (21 children)

Trent Reznor, please

Can we save Trent for whenever they decide to revive Quake?

[–]Ashh_The_CyborgWitch 51 points52 points  (10 children)

Quake 1 remake or Quake 1 prequel

no Stroggworld bullshit this time

[–]secret_pupperFraggin' Evil 42 points43 points  (12 children)

Save them for the Quake reboots. I love their work, but it's not the best fit for Eternal's DLC. Hulshult is the obvious choice, but based on the soundtracks for Quake 2 and 3, I think Sonic Mayhem can recreate the grungy, angry, distorted sound that 2016 and Eternal had.

[–]AncientBag 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Reading Mick's response to this...how he went 8 months followed by another 11 months without pay, and how you dealt him a bad hand mere hours away from the OST deadline...I'm honestly shocked that you could treat someone as talented as Mick like that. Goes to show there's always another side to a story.

[–][deleted] 153 points154 points  (4 children)

.....................Fuck.

[–]mfukar 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Wow. The nerve you had. Good luck getting anybody to trust you next.

[–]LordKarnox1243 319 points320 points  (124 children)

Welp...there goes our Mick Gordon music for the next Doom game.

[–]MeiFromPali-Watch 480 points481 points  (115 children)

Mick ultimately fucked up and their hand was forced, it’s unfortunate but there is other talent out there.

[–]JackStillAlive 143 points144 points  (22 children)

Not wanting to get into the break up between ID and Mick, but I gotta recommend these two for the DLC soundtrack:

  • Andrew Hulshult

  • Trent Reznor

I really think they could perfectly do the style of music that Mick has envisioned for the modern Doom series and both have proved their talent in video-game soundtracks in the past. Please make it happen!

[–]Kozak170 1086 points1087 points  (192 children)

So basically Mick just didn't fulfill his end of the deal and when ID/Bethesda were forced to do it themselves he tried pinning the blame on them. Sounds pretty shitty to me and I'll admit I jumped to support Mick at first. Disappointed to hear this.

[–]Parzivus 697 points698 points  (50 children)

x person cries on Twitter about how they were done some great injustice by y
Rampant speculation and hate directed at y for days/weeks
y releases statement saying x was full of it, or at least being misleading
People talk about how stupid the community is for having a kneejerk reaction
Repeat

I know this sounds bitter but it's practically a script at this point

[–]solid_steak1 251 points252 points  (12 children)

kneejerk reactions are reddit and twitter's specialty.

[–]Blee10 83 points84 points  (7 children)

It's not a social media or even an internet thing. Just sit around when people are watching the news or even sports news and you'll see lots of it.

We all knee-jerk at certain things and I dont really believe anyone that says they don't. I think many go way overboard with it, but knee-jerking isnt some internet exclusive thing. I think its human nature but I also think it's important to be self aware of it.

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (3 children)

And so close after how the Doom community was congratulating themselves for how "non-toxic" they were. They were pretty bloody toxic in that thread too, though.

[–]KiaraZim 299 points300 points  (30 children)

My thoughts exactly. I am even more upset that Mick has done nothing to clarify what happened and prompted this letter.

[–]futanariballs 104 points105 points  (14 children)

I've been saying from the get-go that there is likely more to this story than "bethesda/id bad, mick was screwed over".

Business deals are complicated. None of us are in those board meetings. None of us are on those phone calls. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes. But every time I say that I just get downvoted into oblivion.

[–]Meme_AttackHerald of Gargos 39 points40 points  (34 children)

This hurts real bad. Second time I've had to say goodbye to Mick in the middle of one of my favorite games.

I still remember when he left Killer Instinct, and left us with a final farewell bonus track at the end of one of his final songs.

Fuck, man. Why can't it just work out?

[–]jaaardstyck<3 Caco 29 points30 points  (8 children)

Mick is ambitious, and an artist, and a very talented one at that. However, I know the type. They pick at every single little individual note/pixel until it hits every single possible response nerve known to man. With the number of tracks Mick would have to do, we'd be waiting a decade for his soundtrack to come out.

Dynamic music is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it gives you loads to play around with, and every song is more like 10 songs. On the other hand, if you want to do anything else with it, like compile it into an album, good fucking luck. It will never be perfect and some of your favorites bits are bound to end up on the cutting room floor just because they don't work in that one specific mix you've put together.

[–]consural 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Nowadays there's nothing else ruining the video game industry but the "executives", "lawyers", and "producers".

Shame on you and your lies. And good luck to your lawyers for making up new lies, because they sure as hell will have a hard time after this point.

[–]Apprehensive_Elk478 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What a fucking snake you are Marty.

Go fuck yourself.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (1 child)

Now we know you’re just another lying, thieving corporate scumbag

[–]Cheap_Most1651 36 points37 points  (0 children)

well this aged poorly

[–]Rio_Brando 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Go fuck yourself Marty

[–]senatordeathwish 98 points99 points  (22 children)

TLDR:

Mick couldn't deliver songs in time so he and id agreed Chad would mix the rest of the songs together using the compressed stuff Mick sent to Id. They both understood what was happening and they had a promised deadline to customers.

Mick didn't like the final product but understood why it was like this. Fans misunderstood what his statements online because he said so little. He's no longer working with Id because hes not an employee, hes a contractor who Id hired for a specified amount of time.

He's not doing the music for the single player DLC... also there is single player DLC

edit: WE'VE BEEN LIED TO

[–]blitz_na 147 points148 points  (27 children)

i just wanna ask one thing though

  • doom eternal deluxe edition promised the soundtrack to launch with it
  • doom 2016 came out in may 13th, 2016
  • the official soundtrack for that game came out on september 28th, 2016

i want to know the decision behind making the ost available at launch compared to letting mick letting it mix for as long as he did back in 2016. unless i'm missing something very important here, it just seemed like bundling the ost with the game made this outcome destined to have happened

Reminder to everyone here to be civil. There's a difference between being upset over the quality of a product, versus expressing nothing but pure vitriol and hate.

[–]Individual_Service60 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Im sorry Mick for believing this clown

[–]jcbolduc 31 points32 points  (2 children)

You're a vile, disgusting human being. Seeing as id kept you on, so are they.

[–]zhiryst 29 points30 points  (0 children)

wow what a piece of shit.

[–]snagglewolf 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Shame on Marty but also shame on the gamers who went after Mick. I'm so tired of these toxic douche bags who have nothing better to do than act like absolute garbage because of some twisted need to "defend" a game.

[–]SolaireFan 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Marty, you are a slimy, greasy, and disgusting sleazeballl an a scumbag. Go to hell.

[–]Crisis88 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This has aged like milk.

[–]Legendary_Forgers 29 points30 points  (0 children)

/u/martyatid You should explain yourself and step down from your position at iD you liar.

[–]AleehCosta 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Guys, try to downvote this post as much as possible.

[–]SeaShanty1337 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Fuck you, Marty. Scumbag. You took a brilliant creative who was willing to give his heart and soul to the franchise, took advantage of him monetarily and mentally, and then blatantly lied to ruin his livelihood and attempt to save your man-child ego.

[–]mGb2Electricboogaloo 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Marty, I know you're sweating bullets right now, freaking out. It's over. Your career is over now because you're revealed to be the biggest piece of fucking shit in this entire industry. You're a liar, a fucking snake, and a scumbag.

I call into question what else you have done to get into the position you are now, what was really your ideas and changes and what was someone else's idea to make changes to the DOOM games that you've taken credit for. Whose credit did you take from that doesn't belong to you? What other atrocious shit did you pay with hush money to? May all that be revealed, may all of what you've done come into light and rightfully burn your ass.

You caused irreparable harm to Mick Gordon, weaponized Reddit to not only smear his career and reputation, but to further a cycle of abuse and toxicity within not only the Gaming Industry, but utilizing toxic gamers to send DISGUSTINGLY DETAILED death threats, rape threats. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, you're fucked beyond belief, you're career is over and it's only a matter of time before you're given the ultimate boot from not only id Software, Bethesda, ZeniMax or any studio under Microsoft, BUT the entire gaming industry.

Marty Stratton; Get fucked. Take this L, apologize to Mick Gordon and admit your wrongdoings. I hope you get fired and you never land any position at any gaming studio for the rest of you life, you abusive, manipulative ass-wipe. May your name only be remembered for how much of a fucking asshole you are.

Never play DOOM ever again, you don't even deserve that fuckin' right, piece of shit.

[–]ForQ2 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'll take "Posts That Didn't Age Well" for $1000, Alex.

[–]Mysterions 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Well, we all know this is bullshit now.

[–]KiaraZim 293 points294 points  (58 children)

As a diehard doom and mick gordon fan, reading this letter opens up a lot of info i had no knowledge of. While I respect Mick as an artist, it sounds like he was not trustworthy and honest in delivering on a deadline, even after requesting an additional 6 weeks of time to work on the project.

I am dismayed to hear so many people attacking Id or Bethesda for this, and am glad to know the truth. I will definitely miss his music in the future games and DLC, but for the time being it sounds like he was not entirely honorable in his agreements and decision making, and that is nothing to get mad at anyone other than him for.

Thank you for sharing this.

[–]zodalphaBFG 10K Phobos 25 points26 points  (2 children)

What does this mean "because of ongoing issues receiving the music we needed for the game, did not want to add the distraction at that time ?" in the Context of having the game soundtrack composer not having on board for the OST release, is it because of the CE promise by 2 quarters in advance and then failing to release the same?

And didn't the game itself get delayed from Nov 2019 to 2020, so the consumer protection laws what happened to them ?

I'm sorry this is a pure management problem from Bethesda. Mick who was the composer for the game itself but is not a part of the OST contract which was supposed to be out by November 2019, granted it got delayed to 2020 March. And then got Mick on the contract by January 2020 short of 3 months who else was going to be a part of the contract if not for Mick ? & Why was the contract only for 12 Tracks ?

Could have simply released the done 12 Tracks as Set 1 and get him onboard for another set, this could have saved Chad, Mick, Id Software, Bethesda.

Now we have everyone bashing Mick completely destroying his rep among his own fan base, before this Chad and id Software + Bethesda (due to sour taste from FO76 CE). And no more of the same OST which defined the 2016 game and Eternal.

Pathetic handling of the situation.

[–]Arkanin3 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Watch him take the post down now that Mick responded to him. What a horrible person to work with, typical bethesda.

[–]stikves 29 points30 points  (0 children)

And then this happens:

https://twitter.com/Mick_Gordon/status/1590343092598878210

Hope this actually gets a good resolution. I have been an avid DOOM fan since 1990s, and don't want to give up now.

[–]Zephyr022 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The absolute nerve for you to post this. It's disgraceful.

[–]SomeDamnAuthor 23 points24 points  (1 child)

This is definitely one of the open letters of all time

[–]ApexAftermath 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I will never buy another DOOM game again you rat fuck piece of shit. Your ego trumped making the game the right way and you didn't give a shit.

[–]_Auron_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

generated unnecessary speculation and judgement - and led some to vilify and attack an id employee

As if you didn't do exactly do that to Mick, but of course a sociopath like you wouldn't know how to be held accountable for any of YOUR mistakes.

Never manage any project, any person, or any aspect of a company ever again. No one deserves the hell you put people through.

[–]SilentReavus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hope this attempt to shield your "reputation" was worth the consequences you lying bastard. Nobody will ever listen to you again.

[–]ibuprofeno420mg 26 points27 points  (0 children)

you are a fucking piece of shit Marty

[–]WILD_ACE99 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Old post but to anyone who hasn’t read Mick Gordon’s response needs to. These are all lies

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (1 child)

marty you need to be sued. not only for incompetence but for blackmail and slandering mick gordon. rot in hell

[–]yepgeddon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Fuck Marty and pay Mick.

[–]ScottishAstartes 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I sincerely hope you are as utterly fucked as I think you are, Marty. Legally, of course.

[–]LostAbstract 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Hey Marty, not only did you fail to keep a AAA title on the right track from the jump, but you singlehandedly took what reputation you had left and burned it to ashes. You ran to reddit and cried wolf when you had to hide your failure, and Mick was the perfect man to take the fall. What you didnt expect was he had the receipts and his willingness to use them.

You're an incompetent half-wit, with a fraction of the talent and knowledge than the people you have graced with your presence. Any statement from you at this point should be an open apology and assurance that Mick gets what is due to him financially. Withholding money is akin to snatching food from another families mouth and I hope it keeps you up at night, and thats keeping it civil.

Bethesda, you fucked up royally when you decided protecting Marty was more important than investigating the claims of a CONTRACTED WORKER. How the hell did you let decisions fall back into Marty's hands when Mick CAME TO YOU FOR HELP. The games industry is already rife with issues pertaining to crunch, immense stress, and deadlines that are better set reasonably and sensibly rather than haphazardly and recklessly. How the hell are you making it better? We as fans and consumers want to play your games, yes, but Jesus not at the expense of any of your employee's health, sanity, and livelyhood just so they can sleep under their desks for months at a time in order tO mAkE dEaDLinEs, contracted or otherwise. Whats more important: Your shareholders or the quality of your brand?

Microsoft, congratulations! Along with that pricetag came a PR headache thanks to dumbasses and their egos. If id Software wont do what is necessary, then I hope you step in and pay the man what he is owed. At the very least, do right by Mick.

[–]BlackKn1ght 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Marty, you fucking rat bastard. Fuck you, i knew i should never trust a worthless manager over a musician.

[–]Z661 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Friendship with corporate overlords has ended. Treating artists with respect is my new best friend.

[–]slavi13222 22 points23 points  (1 child)

[–]LordZozzy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Marty, you lying sack of dogshit you.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

u/martyatid you're a piece of shit

[–]SwnSngnuevo classico 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Thank you Marty for letting us know the facts behind all of this. Although it's a big blow to hear that Mick's music is not going to be part of the DLC, I know you guys will find an awesome replacement -- DOOM always seems to find a way. DOOM has proven that the success of the IP can move forward after losing even its original creators. The game has a mystique that has captured many hearts since its introduction and creating new fans and future developers to carry the torch forward. So with every loss there is an opportunity for the next passionate creator to come fill the void left over by an iconic contributor that has parted ways. I am so excited for the DOOM franchise becasue I don't think it's ever been in better hands. So as a fan, i'll hop in the back and enjoy the ride, thanks for driving.

OH and thank you id software for making the best sequel in this historic franchise. Never has a game i've played come this close to actually catching the unreachable dragon that it was chasing. You are all legends and the community owes Chad a huge apology.

[–]Orsus7 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Hope there's a lawsuit for slander coming your way.

[–]Watareyabuyin 21 points22 points  (0 children)
